Paying Income Tax

Tax Day just happened… and it will be here again before you know it.

If you despise paying income tax as much as I do (and I really hate the tax rate placed on independently owned small businesses), having a good plan helps reduce the stress around this time of year.

In a service based industry with minimal overhead, we don’t have a lot of write offs and/or deductions. The hard truth is we don’t have legal ways to avoid taxes like many other business structures. The best thing to do if you’re an LLC or PLLC:

• Set up a separate business savings account and put 30% of all gross income directly into that account. Don’t consider it income, rather it’s money sat aside for taxes. By doing this simple behavior, you can make sure you have the money needed to pay your taxes each quarter (or if you’re like me, at the end of tax season along with paying the late fees for not paying quarterly taxes).

I’ve seen way too many therapists in a panic at tax time because they don’t have the money to pay their taxes. If you made $10,000 this month in gross revenue after expenses, you don’t have 10 grand to spend. You actually 7. By being disciplined with your money and religiously setting 30% back for taxes, you shouldn’t have any major surprises come next April.
