Texas LPC CE Rule Changes
Good Morning, and welcome to Counselor Weekly! The only constant in life is change, so let's talk about the new LPC CE rules.
Thanks again for being part of the community!
Want to be a really cool person by referring your friends/colleagues a way to gain access to my newsletter!? Here's a link you can forward that will send them to my sign up page to begin receiving Counselor Weekly every Wednesday. I appreciate your support!
Until I have an official sponsor, looks like I'm the sponsor!
I'm launching a new site in the next couple weeks and you can sign up to be notified when it's ready to go! Just click HERE, or the photo above and it will take you right to the site. If you are an LPC Supervisor in Texas (sorry, starting in Texas only and will look at options for other states down the road), or a potential Supervisee looking for a Supervisor, this is the place for you! It's a directory for LPC Supervisors to market their services by listing their information so that potential Supervisees can connect with them and hopefully find a perfect match! If you have any questions, click REPLY to this email and I can answer any questions you have. Thanks again for allowing me this personal promotion! 🙏
So let's get to it!
Today is 3/8/23 and it's Be Nasty Day! I seriously didn't make that up. Feel free to be nasty (just not to your clients)!
Here's the short and skinny of today's newsletter:

Update on the New LPC CE Rules
Click the link above to see the entire rule, but here are some highlights
24 total hours required each renewal cycle (this is the same)
You can carry over a max of 10 hours towards next renewal cycle as long as they weren't used in the current cycle.
6 hours of Ethics required and 3 hours in cultural diversity and competency.
You must obtain a minimum of 50% of your continuing education hours must come from a specific list of list of entities (you can check out the list by clicking the link above). NOTE: this doesn't go into effect until 1/1/24
The human trafficking course now appears to be optional, but you can take an approved course for up to 1 hour of continuing education.
There is still no pre-approval process for providers of continuing education.
Must maintain proof of continuing education for a minimum of 3 years.
Make sure to read the rule in it's entirety. I just hit on some of the high points.
Overall, it's not a huge deal, but definitely want to be aware of the changes since it goes into effect March 7, 2023.
One final note about Continuing Education in for Texas LPCs... We don't use the term CEUs!! In Texas, they are simply CEs which stands for Continuing Education. I know it's nitpicky, but wanted to share that.
And now some interesting articles:
There are so many "alternative" treatments for mental health disorders. I'm not advocating the use of this product, but I think it's important to be aware of what's out there.
How Do I Make Therapy Stick?
Considering ways to make the counseling experience more memorable for your clients. This article has some options.
I find that engaging my empathic curiosity by using supportive, frequent, and ongoing review and modification of goals helps these clients feel validated. It helps them see how therapy and their own work provides incremental progress toward their goals. I also find that regularly following up on homework assignments and assessing how useful clients find these assignments keeps them—and me—accountable.
This could be an alternative form of meditation to teach your clients. For some clients, sitting in silence isn't the best fit. This alternative method will get them outside and moving while still working on meditative practices.
Statistic of the Week:
Worldwide, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health issue in any given year
