Counselor Weekly- 2/8/23

Where Counselors Go to Get the Good Stuff!

Good Morning, and welcome to Counselor Weekly! Like a fine wine, it just keeps getting better and better as it ages.

Thanks again for being part of the community!

Want to be a really cool person by referring your friends/colleagues a way to gain access to my newsletter!? Here's a link you can forward that will send them to my sign up page to begin receiving Counselor Weekly every Wednesday. I appreciate your support!

Shameless self-promotion below!!

I'm launching a new site in the next couple weeks and you can sign up to be notified when it's ready to go! Just click HERE, or the photo above and it will take you right to the site. If you are an LPC Supervisor in Texas (sorry, starting in Texas only and will look at options for other states down the road), or a potential Supervisee looking for a Supervisor, this is the place for you! It's a directory for LPC Supervisors to market their services by listing their information so that potential Supervisees can connect with them and hopefully find a perfect match! If you have any questions, click REPLY to this email and I can answer any questions you have. Thanks again for allowing me this personal promotion! 🙏

So let's get to it!

Today is 2/8/23 and it's National School Counselor Week! Since this is a newsletter focused on mental health counselors, thought it was appropriate to share. As a former school counselor, let's take some time today to celebrate the hard work they do and positive impact made in students/parents/communities lives. Thank you!

Here's the short and skinny of today's newsletter:

  • Business resources for private practice counselors

  • Interesting articles related to mental health

  • Statistic of the week

  • Cat Photo

Business Resources:

Looking to start a private practice? Interested in growing your practice?

There are a ton of online business resources and consultants that have programs to help you create a private practice (or grow your business). Honestly, I'm not that impressed with most. Creating a thriving practice really takes two words: HARD WORK!

With that being said, there are some helpful resources if you're just getting started:

  • From their website: CAQH technology-enabled solutions eliminate redundant and inefficient administrative processes between health plans and providers for credentialing, directory maintenance, coordination of benefits and other essential business functions.

  • It's free!

  • Basically, this site is a good place to start when beginning a private practice by getting all your information into a database that will help you get on insurance panels MUCH MORE EFFICIENTLY!

  • Check out the video below for more info:

If you're just getting started, here's another VERY important resource!

  • The NPI is a 10-digit number that will be used to identify you to your health care partners, including all payers, in all HIPAA standard transactions.

  • This is required when working with insurance!

  • If you already have one, might be a good idea to go HERE, and make sure it's updated.

  • There are two types of NPI's: 1 and 2. NPI Entity Type 1 is for Individuals, and NPI Entity Type 2 is for Group practices. If you're a sole proprietor, you'll need the NPI 1.

  • Here's a link to What You Need To Know about NPI.

And now some interesting articles:

Yes, therapists are human and get angry too! If you disagree, well you probably shouldn't be a therapist because you live in denial. Do you relate to the coping skills in the article? How do you cope with anger?

No, we don't do lobotomies anymore! Though it's kind of morbid, this article is a look back at how far we've come in mental health. Still can't believe the guy who invented the procedure won a friggin' Nobel Prize!! 🔪 🧠

If you work with young people, this may be of interest. Though it's a small sample size in the article, the results are quite impressive! Technology isn't always bad...

Statistic of the Week:

From Salary.com, the average salary for a Licensed Professional Counselor in the US:

$55,805

Since most of my current readers are from Texas, click the link below to see how you compare. Do you think it's higher or lower? (hint: you won't be very happy to find out)
