Psychology Today: Is It Worth It?

Short answer: probably

Psychology Today costs $30 per month. That’s $360 per year.

If you get one client that attends at least four sessions with you, it already paid for itself. More than likely, the ROI (Return On Investment) will be financially worth it. Especially when starting out, this is one of the most cost efficient strategy to secure a few clients.

Keep in mind, you will be one of MANY therapists listed on the site and your profile will likely never be seen by most potential clients. The good news is there are a ton of people that use Psychology Today to find a counselor, so based on the numbers, you’re still likely to receive at least a few referrals through this resource each year.

As you progress in your practice, you might find there’s no more need for Psychology Today as you receive niche referrals from better, more localized sources.

Overall, it’s worth a small investment if you’re wanting to get more referrals and clients. You’ll probably spend way more on coffee each month than the cost of keeping this profile up and running.

One tip: I would recommend using your Psychology Today as a way to market to a very specific client. Because the site is saturated with therapists, and you likely won’t get that many referrals from it anyway, make your profile super specific so that the clients who do reach out are wanting to specifically access your niche service. I would also use this as a way to grow your self-pay caseload by not listing insurance as an option (if you accept insurance). Here’s a example I made up (created by ChatGPT just to give you an idea of a hyper-focused listing on Psych Today):

Headline:
Specializing in therapy for highly sensitive professionals navigating burnout, overwhelm, and perfectionism.

About Me:
Are you a professional who feels everything deeply? Do you find yourself exhausted from navigating demanding workplaces or relationships while trying to maintain a sense of calm and balance? As a highly sensitive person (HSP) myself, I understand how the world can feel overwhelming at times. I specialize in working with highly sensitive individuals, especially those in high-pressure careers, to help them embrace their sensitivity as a strength while learning tools to reduce overwhelm and thrive.

With over 8 years of experience, I focus on helping HSPs identify and manage emotional triggers, build stronger boundaries, and create lives aligned with their values. Whether you're dealing with workplace burnout, relationship stress, or general emotional overwhelm, I’m here to help you find peace and empowerment.

Who I Help:
I work exclusively with highly sensitive individuals, including:

  • Professionals in high-stress careers (e.g., healthcare, law, tech, academia).

  • Creatives and entrepreneurs who feel stuck or overwhelmed by perfectionism.

  • Individuals navigating difficult relationships or people-pleasing tendencies.

How I Work:
I use a blend of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, self-compassion techniques, and somatic awareness to help you develop practical coping skills and emotional resilience. Our work together will focus on empowering you to reduce stress, build confidence, and find clarity in your personal and professional life.

What You Can Expect:

  • A safe, non-judgmental space tailored to your unique experiences.

  • Tools to manage sensory overload and emotional exhaustion.

  • Strategies to embrace your sensitivity as a strength rather than a burden.

Session Format and Rates:

  • Individual therapy for adults, conducted via secure telehealth.

  • Private pay only, with rates starting at $175/session.

  • Sliding scale available for a limited number of clients.

As you can see in the example above, you can create a super specific profile that targets your niche client. This can help prevent receiving generic referrals that may not interest you, and it also will make your profile stand out in search engines when people are looking for a specific type of therapy or therapist.
