This Week’s Practice Management Tip
DO NOT CONTRACT WITH COMPANIES THAT PAY YOU CRAP RATES
I’m not talking about contracting with insurances, schools, and EAPs (though you shouldn’t contract with any of those that pay terrible rates either).
I’m referring to contracting with private practices that offer unfair rates/percentages for your services.
I recently came across a job advertisement offering about $40 per clinical hour. This is ridiculous. Most insurers pay around $90-$140 per session, so you would be making less than 50% of the rate for service. That won’t cut it long term and will lead to frustration and resentment.
$40/hr X 30 clients a week: $1200
$1200/week X 4: $4800 per month
This is a salary of $57,600 (before taxes, no benefits)… for averaging 30 clients a week!!
You can make more than that in a salary job doing a whole lot less work, and not seeing 30 clients a week.
If you don’t want to deal with all the requirements of managing a practice, working in a group practice can be a wonderful experience when done the right way. The practice owner takes care of all the “stuff” so you can focus on doing what you love: COUNSELING.
If the percentage/rate for clinical services is fair, it can be mutually beneficial. BUT, make sure it’s fair and transparent.
Interesting article, but not sure if I would agree with it. Alludes to the mental health crisis being an issue of ineffective therapy/therapists.
Helpful tips for anyone in private practice wanting to target specific niche client populations.
