This Week’s Practice Management Tip

Grow Your Caseload Through EAPs

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a workplace benefit that provides employees with access to confidential counseling and support services for personal or work-related issues. EAPs typically offer short-term counseling for concerns like stress, anxiety, depression, family problems, substance abuse, or financial challenges.

Employees can access EAP services at no cost, and the program is designed to help them manage issues before they impact job performance. EAPs also provide referrals to external resources for long-term support if needed. Employers benefit from EAPs by fostering a healthier, more productive workforce while reducing absenteeism and turnover.

Though EAPs traditionally don’t pay that great, I recently spoke with one therapist that earns a rate of $90 per 55 minute session contracting with Spring Health. The nice part is there’s typically not a lot of paperwork, no diagnosis needed, and it’s short term, solution-focused therapy. There tends to be a lot of referrals and this is a good way to fill your caseload fairly quickly. This is also mostly (if not entirely) virtual, so you can provide these services from anywhere that provides a confidential space.

Remember, every hour you’re sitting in your office with no client is guaranteeing $0. Might as well make $80-$100 while you’re building up your practice!

PLEASE NOTE: regarding Spring Health, I’m only recommending this as a contractor, not being an employee. Spring Health has a current job opening for a full time therapist (40 hour commitment, up to 30 sessions per week!!!) for the grand total of:

$62-70 K

To give context to that salary: if you billed 30 sessions per week as a contractor with Spring Health at a rate of $80 per session, that is $2400 per week / $9600 per month / $115,200 per year. Granted, there are no benefits as a contractor, but you could potentially make almost double the salary by doing the same amount of work!

I find this to be a troubling trend in working for these mental health startups: offering extremely low salaries to maintain huge caseloads.

Recipe for burnout and resentments… while the people NOT providing the services continue to grow profits that you don’t benefit from.

Short answer: NO
