BetterHelp: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Hello, and welcome to Counselor Weekly! Thanks again for being part of the community!

Here's the short and skinny of today's newsletter:

  • Meme of the Day

  • Weekly Resource

  • Interesting Articles

  • Feedback and Survey

Until I have an official sponsor, looks like I'm the sponsor!

Are you an LPC Supervisor in Texas wanting to market your services and connect with potential Associates? Are you recently graduated from your Master’s program and beginning the search for an LPC Supervisor? If so, Find Your Supervisor is a directory for LPC Supervisors to list their information in a searchable index so that potential Supervisees can connect with them and hopefully find a perfect match! There’s even a FREE version! Though you will not get all the robust search capabilities and members only resources you receive with the paid version, the FREE option still allows you to market basic information about your practice.

What do I get in the paid version? The short answer: A LOT! CLICK HERE to access the pricing page to learn more. Just think, if you contract with one new Associate from the site, the PREMIUM plan has paid for itself for the whole year within one month. PLUS, I’m giving you a discount code to take one of my Supervisor Refresher Courses (6 hours of CEs) for FREE as part of the Premium membership. It’s almost paying for itself just with that discount.

If you have any questions, click REPLY to this email and I can answer any questions you have. Thanks again for allowing me this personal promotion! 🙏

Meme of the Day

I Highlighted this platform a few weeks ago. There’s a BIG reason I’m bringing it up again!

It’s terrible…

Where do I begin? You can read my full blog post about BetterHelp here, but I’ll give you the highlights:

  • It’s a rip off and almost feels like a scam. There’s a reason BetterHelp doesn’t promote their pay structure and make it more public like other platforms. Because it’s ridiculous. It starts at just $30 per hour of work (and this means direct client services. BetterHelp caps your virtual session at 45 minutes so each session really only pays 75% of the $30, about $23 for a 45 minute treatment session). I’m not making this up!

  • No shows and late cancellations: if someone cancels just before the session, BetterHelp pays you a grand total of 10 minutes in time (about $5). If they no show, they pay you for 15 minutes of your time (about $7). An hour of your time is lost and you don’t have the option of billing the client based on your own cancellation/policy.

  • I could go on, but that’s why I wrote the blog post!

Bottom line: BetterHelp preys on the social service industry and is awful. The best thing you can do is never contract with them, and please tell your colleagues/friends to stay far away. Feel free to pass on my contact info and I’ll be happy to share my story so they have an honest picture of what they are getting into.

Lastly, advocate to everyone you can to avoid these types of platforms. It degrades our field. BetterHelp is marketing everywhere and it’s important to tell people to seek counseling with a provider of their choice and not use a platform like BetterHelp.

Don’t just take my word for it. Here’s another recent article about another provider’s experience with BetterHelp.

What a great read! I think this should be required reading for all therapists as it reminds us of what’s important in living a “good life” based on the world’s longest running study on human happiness.

We’re in tax season, so every penny saved helps!

Feedback and Brief Survey

I can’t believe I’ve been sending out Counselor Weekly for almost a year!

Truth is, it takes a lot of time and money to curate this newsletter each week. After a year of work, I wanted to reach out and see how to best move forward. My goal when starting this newsletter was to provide a weekly resource for mental health professionals that offered insightful information and engaging content (hopefully I somewhat accomplished that!).

To be honest, it unfortunately hasn’t seen a ton of growth so I’m in the contemplation phase of how to move forward, or pivot into a new venture. To help me in deciding how to move forward, I would really appreciate you completing the survey below 👇:
